Creeping ciliates

  • 25 – 50 µm
  • roundish body with convex upper side, in A. lynceus smooth, in A. cicada with 6 dorsal ridges and in A. turrita with spike-like point
  • cilia grown together to form “walking” cilia

 

In activated sludge and biofilms:

  • more common with increasing sludge age
  • A. lynceus and A. turrita occur with good oxygen supply, A. cicada also with oxygen concentration < 1 mg/l
