Sheath: present, hard to identify
Transverse walls: visible at the uncovered ends of filaments
Cell form: rectangular / square, visible at the uncovered ends of filaments
Length of filaments: > 50 – 500 µm
Filament diameter: 0.6 – 1.5 µm
Gram staining: variable
Neisser staining: negative

 

Factors promoting growth:

  • sludge load < 0.2 kg BSB5/ kg TS * d
  • blending of municipal sewage and return sludge before biology
  • untreated raw sewage
  • unhydrolysed particulate substrate
  • N and P deficit

 

Countermeasures:

  • setting up a substrate gradient (aerobic selector) at biology inflow
  • preliminary sedimentation of sewage
  • addition of highly ferrous precipitants (e.g. FERRAL FD 1600, FERRAPLUS, FERRACLAR CLASSIC, CONTISOLF Winter)
