Factors promoting growth:
- sludge load < 0.15 kg BSB5/ kg TS * d
- industrial wastewater (agribusiness) with low molecular compounds
- common in plants with inadequate oxygen supply and/or nitrogen/phosphorous deficit
Countermeasures:
- increasing the sludge load
- setting up a substrate gradient at activation inflow or an aerobic selector with brief retention time
- where there is oxygen deficiency, increase of oxygen supply and nutrient availability
